What do you do?/What is your farm?

We own and operate Tide Mill Creamery, an organic goat dairy and creamery located on a nine generation family farm on the Down East coast of Maine. We produce organic cheeses, yogurt, kefir, and other value-added products with the milk from our goats and my cousin's herd of cows.

What are you doing to help solve the problem of food insecurity?

I feel our work addresses food insecurity by offering a local source of nutrient dense food that people can access. If anything were to happen to our current systems of shipping food thousands of miles, it would be even more important to have regional sources of food available. Having a viable farm business is also instrumental in preserving our farmland for present and future generations, a critical component of food security.

How big of an issue do you think food insecurity is?

I think food insecurity is a very serious issue in our community and throughout the country. In my opinion our system is broken at many levels and requires some serious attention. The growing interest in local and organic foods is one of the bright spots but it is not without its own set of challenges.
